Beijing South Railway Station has a history of more than 100 years, dating back to 1897, when it was called Majiabao Railway Station. In 1902, the station's name changed to Yongdingmen Station, then in 1988 it changed again to the Beijing South Railway Station. The station was under reconstruction between 2006 and 2008, and re-opened August 1st, 2008. The new South Railway Station mainly handles the bullet trains traveling to Taishan, Qingdao, Jinan, Shijiazhuang, Qinhuangdao, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, and the intercity trains to Tianjin and Tanggu District in Tianjin. See Beijing Train Schedules

The main building of Beijing South Railway Station is a two-story building with three floors underground. The train platform and is on the first floor and the second floor is home to a 47,654-square-meter (56,993 square yards) station hall. To the east and west of this floor are the entrance halls, and in the middle is the waiting hall. Ticket offices are located at each of the four corners of the station hall (the station has 84 train ticket windows and 39 auto ticket machines). The station hall and the platform floor are connected by underground transfer floors and 111 escalators. The first basement level holds a transfer station, and exit areas leading to the parking lots. Here passengers can leave the station from the east and west exit halls and go up to the northern and southern squares to take buses or taxies. The second basement level holds the subway station of Subway Line 4, and the third underground floor holds the subway station of Subway Line 14 (under construction).
