 Introduction: Zhangye is the fourth largest city in Gansu Province. In ancient times, it was an important transportation hub along the Silk Road

 Location: It is located in the center of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, with Wuwei and Jinchang to the east and Jiuquan and Jiayuguan to the West; neighboring Qinghai to the South and Inner Mongolia to the north. 

 Physical Features: It lies to the south of Qilian Mountain and the north of Heli Mountain and Longshou Mountain. The Heihe River flows through the city, forming a number of oases.

 History: According to archaeological records, about 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic Age, there were people living and farming here. In the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 24 AD), it became an important hub of the Silk Road. In 111 BC, Han Wudi named it Zhangye Shire. During the Sui Dynasty (581 - 618), Zhangye developed into a metropolis for international trade. In the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), the famous monk Master Xuanzang passed Zhangye on his way to India. In the Yuan Dynasty (1379 - 1368), the Italian Traveler, Marco Polo, lived in the city for one year and described Zhangye as a rich city with magnificent religious buildings in his travel notes.

 Weather: It has a continental climate with an average annul temperature of 6 °C (42 °F). The coldest month is January with an average temperature of -8.5 °C (16.7 °F) while July is the hottest month with an average temperature of 19.9 °C (67.8 °F).

 Zhangye Railway Station: The railway station is located in the city center, reached by Bus No. 1. There are regular trains from/ to Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Chengdu, Urumqi, Hankou, Chongqing, Jinan, Lianyungang, Hangzhou, Zhengzhou, Baoji, Luoyang, Nanjing, Jiayuguan, Korla, Dunhuang, Lanzhou and Wuwei.   


 Long-distance Bus Stations: There are coaches from Lanzhou East Long-distance Bus Station to Zhangye; it takes about 3.5 hours and costs CNY 66 - 100.

 East Long-distance Bus Station: No.1 South Donghuan Road; Bus Routes: Bus No. 9, 12, 23 & Laosimiao Special Line.
 South Long-distance Bus Station: No. 35 Nahuan Road; Bus Routes: Bus No. 1, 3, 9, 11, 13, 23 & Hongshawo Special Line.
 Buses: There are 24 bus routes in the city, covering most areas of the city.

 Travel Tips: 
 Food: Cooked wheaten food is the major food in the city. Delicious Zhangye snacks are fish-like dough, fried blood sausage, mutton soup, gray bean soup, boiled mutton, Sautéed Preserved mutton, yellow wine. The Snack Street on Minzhu Street opens from 06:00 to 04:00 the next day, where all the snacks can be found. 
 Shopping: Visitors can go to the shopping malls on South Renmin Road or West Renmin Road. Big shopping malls: Zhangye Market & Hexi Market
