Green Lotus Peak

Ask Question

The Green Lotus Peak is the main peak of Yangshuo County. It lies in the southeastern part of the region, near the Li River. The mount is green all year round. Looking from beyond, the peak is just like a lotus in bud. In the gentle breeze, the reflection of the peak in the water looks as if a lotus flower is blossoming gently. Thus the 'inverted reflection of the Lotus Peak' has become a key scenic spot in Yangshuo.

It is said that at your first sight you will not find the Green Lotus Peak shaping like a lotus flower. You may just find that the mount is greener and the trees are much thicker than other mounts. Therefore, many visitors cannot understand why it was named 'Lotus Peak', usually they wonder where the lotus peak is. The local people explain us that that indicates the wisdom of the ancestors who never observed things in a statical way; instead, they viewed the world dynamically and comparatively.

The Green Lotus Peak has an elevation of 297.8 meters (977 feet) and its relative height is 186.2 meters (about 611 feet). The peak is one of the eight unique hills along the  Li River, together with the Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill, Duxiu Hill, Diecai Hill, Jiumahua Hill, Schoolboy Hill and the Jingping Hill. Thus the it is the pride of Yangshuo people and also the landmark of Yangshuo County. Once you see the Green Lotus Peak, you know that you have reached Yangshuo.

There a trail in the northwestern part of the Green Lotus Peak, through which one can climb to the top of the peak to admire the endless mountains and winding Li River. On the north side of the Mount Yangshuo, there are two peaks standing against each other, shaping like the horns of goat. That is why this mount was originally called Mount Yangjiao (Goat Horns). During the Sui Dynasty (581 - 618) when a county government was founded here, its named was changed into Mount Yangshuo according to the partial tone of 'Yangjiao'.

Beside the Mount Yangshuo is the Mount Tianwei which resembles a swan. There is a huge stone on the top of the mount which shapes like an eagle standing there. Thus this scenery is called    'Alpine Eagle'. On the mount top, the Mount Longtou (Dragon Head) and Shouxian Peak can be seen cross the Li River; and this scene is named 'Double Peaks Lock the River'. Looking toward the east, one can see the distant Eastern Mountain. The scenery here is fantastic during the sunrise.

Since the Green Lotus Peak is well known for its green trees, you can just imagine the density of the plants covering the mount. They are so thickly dotted as through they have been planted under careful arrangement. The intertwisting arbor and shrub has formed a lot of barriers. So it is not easy for visitors to climb the peak bare-handed. However, once you reach the top, the scenery there is quite wonderful: you will see a peaceful ancient town lying beside the beautiful Li River and snuggling up to the surrounding green mountains. Just like a work of jade carving, delicate and elegant.
