It covers an area of 12,000 square meters (3 acres) with a floor space of 24,000 square meters (6 acres). The most mysterious building in the museum should be 'Tian Jiabing Building' which invested by the Hong Kong Businessman Tian Jiabing and Beijing City Government. In the building there stored over 200,000 pieces of fine specimens, most of which are in a class by themselves at home and abroad such as the world-famous skull of the Yellow River Elephant, 26-meter-long dragon fossil, and the unique mummy fossil of dinosaurs in China.

With an exhibition area of 8,000 square meters (2 acres), the museum is made up of Paleontology Hall, Zoology Hall, Botany Hall and Mankind Evolution Hall. The permanent exhibitions are mainly arranged according to the evolutionary trend of organisms, showing the Bio-diversity and its relationships with the environments and establishing a panorama of the emergence and development of the life on Earth. The Paleontology Hall shows us the origin and the inchoate evolution process of creatures; the Zoology Hall reconstructs the environment of the representative wild animals, showing their beauty and magic; the Botany Hall is like a green epic narrating all kinds of plants' millions of years' evolution; the Mankind Evolution Hall reveals the process of how human beings stem from the animal.

To cater to the teenagers, the museum is also built with a 'Dinosaur World' made up of 'Triassic Park', 'Jurassic Park' and 'Cretaceous Park'. Here reappears ecology sight of the Dinosaurs Times: lifelike dinosaur group, the blood fighting between dinosaurs based on the law of the jungle, the mysterious Jurassic Grand Canyon as well as the prospering scene in the sea during the Dinosaurs Times. Visitors can have a full view of the dinosaur world, or hike through the falls to enjoy the spectacular scene in the Water Curtain Cave, or watch the dinosaur films in the video room.
