Covering an area of 26.4 square kilometers (10.19 square miles) before expansion, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (IATA Code: SHA) is about 13 km (8.08 miles) from downtown Shanghai, and 40 km (24.85 miles) from Pudong International Airport. As one of the biggest international aviation hubs in China, Hongqiao Airport has 2 runways, 2 passenger terminals, and handles 40 million passengers annually. Terminal Building 1 is 82,000 square meters (98,071 square yards), consisting of two lounge buildings. The newly built Terminal Building 2 covers an area of 362,600 square meters (433,665 square yards). The flights of Shanghai under the 18 airlines located in the two terminal buildings can reach 91 cities at home and abroad.

The expansion project started in 2006 and finished at the end of 2009. The project aims to make Hongqiao Airport a Green Airport. It adopts energy-saving techniques such as natural light and ventilation systems, and operates a rain recycling system which uses the recycled water to clean the airport and water the lawns.

There are free shuttle buses and public buses for passengers to transfer between the two terminals. The shuttle buses depart every 5-15 minutes from 6:30 to 23:00. Passengers can take the buses north of Exit No.1 at the Arrival Level in Terminal 1 (T1) and the 1st floor of Transportation Center in Terminal 2 (T2). It takes about 15 minutes to transfer between T1 and T2 by shuttle bus. Passengers can also take Bus No.941 at the bus station on the first floor of the Transportation Center in T2 and at Arrivals B in T1 to transfer between T1 and T2 (ticket fare: CNY 2).

If you have any questions about air tickets, you can go to the Information Counters at the Domestic and International Departure Halls. A telephone information line is also available, and the numbers are +86 21 62688918 (AUTO) and +86 21 62683659 (MANU). Additionally, there are lounges and shops in the airport, where you can have a good rest or buy some duty-free goods. There are also nursing rooms, lost and found center, luggage storage room, post office, ATM Machines, electric power carts, restaurants, wireless network coverage in the arrival level and 12 internet zones in the waiting area for passengers' convenience.
