Anshun is situated in the central part of Guizhou Province and the eastern part of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, occupying a total area of 9,264 square kilometers (3,577 square miles). It borders with Guiyang City that is the provincial capital of Guizhou Province to the east, near the Liupanshui City and Qianxinan Zhou region to the east, next to the Qiannan Zhou region to the south, and to the north borders with the Bijie area. Among the people here, the ethnic groups including Buyi, Miao, Hui, Gelo account for 38.4 percent of Anshun population.
History
Dating back to the 13th century, Anshun is an old established trading center, linking north and south China with areas as remote as Burma via Kunming. It used to be the throat way between Guizhou and Yunnan provinces since the ancient times. Historically, it was considered as 'the stomach of Qian (namely Guizhou province), the throat of Dian (namely Yunnan Province), the lips and teeth of Shu Yue (namely Sichuan and Guangdong provinces)'.
Topography
Anshun is a hilly area with the karst topography. Mountainous area occupies 64.5 percent of the total area. Located in the dividing line of the Yangtze River, Wujiang river and the Beipang river valley of the Pearl River, with the the highest elevation of 1,850 meters (6,069.5 feet) and the lowest of 365 meters (1,197.5 feet).
Climate
Situated in China's Central Subtropical Zone, the climate of Anshun is humid subtropical monsoon climate and the average temperature is between 14 degrees Centigrade (about 57 degrees Fahrenheit) and 16 degrees Centigrade (about 61 degrees Fahrenheit). The highest temperature in summer is 26 degrees Centigrade (about 79 degrees Fahrenheit) and the lowest temperature in winter is 4 degrees Centigrade (about 39 degrees Fahrenheit). The hottest month is usually July and the coldest month is usually January.
Tourist Resources
Anshun is well known as a tourist city, for its famous attraction the Huangguoshu Waterfalls. The main attractions also include the Dragon Palace, the Confucius Temple (also named Wen Temple, in which a wax painting museum is situated) and the Hongfeng Lake. As the birthplace of ancient Qianzhong (meaning the middle part of Guizhou) culture, Anshun has many historical relics, such as the Wen Temple, the Yangming Cave in Xiuwen, and the Xifeng Hot Spring. All those ancient sites, buildings and cultural landscapes are kept well in Anshun City. What is more, the wax printing and wax pictures are the highlight of the local products.
