Situated in Xicheng District of Beijing City, beside Beijing Exhibition Hall, facing Beijing Astronomy Observatory, the Beijing Zoo encompasses stretches of land, beautiful flowerbeds, lotus pools, and houses some of the rarest animals. Occupying an area of 865,000 square meters (213.7 acres), Beijing Zoo is the largest zoo in China but also a garden mixing the beauty of garden and natural scenery. For an animal lover, it is doubtlessly the great pleasure of visiting, for anyone with less interests, it is surely an unforgettable experience to travel there.

Originally as a park before 1906, the Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) had it converted into a farm as well as a zoo and opened it to the public in 1908. The zoo suffered from a period of hard times and lost all its glory with only 12 monkeys, 2 parrots and one blind emu remained before the founding of People's Republic of China. Since independence, more animals were well-bred and collected. The zoo was reopened to public in 1950 and the number of animals is on the rise.

Today it possesses seven thousand animals of 600 different species with 30 massive halls. It is indeed a big collection of animals from home and abroad. The animals include the golden monkeys, giraffes, elephants, hippopotamuses, Manchurian tigers, white-lipped deer, yaks from Tibet, enormous sea turtles, polar bears from the North Pole, kangaroos from Australia, and zebras from Africa, which makes it easy to do zoological research.

One of the most appealing parts of the zoo is the panda section. This section requires a separate admission fee of 5 RMB, but do not get away because it is well worth your pay. The lovely pandas can catch your eyeballs totally. The cuddly animals are kept in a large space with ample greenery to make the environment more natural and comfortable for this highly endangered species.

The aquarium is another highlight in the zoo. Opened to the public in 1999, it is the largest ocean hall in China houses aquatic animals like crocodiles and performing sea lions and dolphins. The zoo not only opens the exhibition halls but also offers the pavilions, green plants, different rooms.

Besides those cute animals and the aquarium, the zoo also has grounds and the architecture. There are a number of ancient buildings scattered throughout the grounds. The stream offers a wonderful place for relaxation and there are plenty of luscious green grounds for children to frolic.
