Mt. Panshan

Ask Question

Standing 90 kilometers (56 miles) east of Beijing and 110 kilometers (68 miles) north of Tianjin, Mt. Panshan was also selected as one of the 'Top fifteen Scenic Attractions in China' in Chinese history, well-known as the 'First Mountain to East Beijing' at home and abroad.

As a section of the southern Mt. Yanshan, Mt. Panshan is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) long from east to west and is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide from the north to south. It owns both natural landscapes and historical sites, built with a total of 72 temples and 13 pagodas in the past. It is a royal garden, combining green trees, ancient caves, unique peaks and clear water. It became well-known in the Han Dynasty (206 - 220 BC) and was popular in the Tang (618 - 907) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties. Lots of emperors, officers, officials, poets and scholars had ever traveled here, among which emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty is the representative who had visited Mt. Panshan 32 times and left 1,366 poems. A grand costume performance of Qianlong' patrolling was held at the scenic area every Saturday to reconstruct the pomp of then.

However, most of the constructions on it had been destroyed because of the wars after the Qing Dynasty. In recent years, the local government has renovated and reconstructed it into an attracting tourist resort again. The present Panshan Mountain covers an area of over 100 square kilometers (39 square miles), with the sights of 'Five peaks', 'Eight Stones' and 'Circling Mountain'. The former Tiancheng Temple, Wansong Temple, Yunzhao Temple and the stupa have also been reconstructed.

Walking into Mt. Panshan, what in your eyes first is clear streams and the largest temple on it Tiancheng Temple named by Emperor Qianlong. It lies on cliffs and faces gullies, built with carved beams and painted pillars. Climbing on, you will see a variety of rocks, unique and multiform. Among them, there is a kind of rock named shaking rock in the shape of a longevity peach. Once you push it, it will shake for a while itself magically. Reaching the top, the Moon Hanging Peak (Guayue feng), your eyes will be full of vast greenness, most of which are pine trees in different postures and manners. The sutra of the tang Dynasty is just located there. It's said that there is Buddhist light sparkling on the sutra every New Year Eve of the Chinese lunar calendar.

Thanks to the local government, the ropeway was opened in 2004. Tourists can take a cable car to the Moon hanging Peak, the main peak of Panshan Mountain directly. The supporting facilities around it are available in all varieties, including hotels, rest homes, and restaurants.
