Location: Baishan city is located in southeastern Jilin Province, facing North Korea across the Yalu River and neighbouring Yanbian, Tonghua and Jilin cites. Its longitude lies between 126°7' and 128°18' E, and latitude between 41°21' and 42°48'.

 Physical Features: Baishan City lies at the west of Changbai Mountain, with Changbai lava plateau and Jingyu lava plateau covering most of the area. Longgang and Laoling Mountains traverse the city. The city has four rivers, which are Yalu River, two headstreams of Songhua River and Hunjiang River. The highest point of the city is at Baiyun Peak on Changbai Mountain with an elevation of 2,691 meters (8,829 feet), while the lowest point is only 279.3 meters (916.3 feet) in Jingyu County.

 History: Early in the Neolithic Period, humans lived in Baishan area. From the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 - 220) to the early Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), the area was ruled by Koguryo Kingdom (an ancient kingdom located in northeastern China and north of Korean Peninsula between 37 BC and 668 AD). In 668 during the Tang Dynasty, the Koguryo Kingdom was defeated by the Tang and the Baishan area then became a part of the Tang’s land.

 Attractions: Baishan City is one of the top ten ecotourism cities in China, boasting undulating mountains and crisscrossing valleys and rivers. The Changbai Mountain is known for its snowy summit, colorful flowers, verdant trees and grasses, rich mineral water resources and hot springs. The limpid Heaven Pool (Tianchi Lake) is the largest and deepest volcanic lake in China, and it is also the fountain of Songhua River, Yalu River and Tumen River. There are many valleys on the mountain, such as Changbai Mountain Jinjiang River Valley, Yalu River Valley and Expecting Swan (Wang Tian E) Valley. 

More tourist attractions in Baishan: Linjiang Flower Mountain Hot Spring, Fusong Dew River Game Land, Changbai Mountain Hot Spring Resort, Baishan Taiping Lake, Lingguang Pagoda and Changbai Mountain Maze Cave. 

 Transportation: 
 Air: There are regular flights connecting Baishan City with Beijing, Shanghai and Changchun. The Changbaishan Airport is located at the Changbai Mountain Natural Reserve in Songjianghe Town of Fusong County, which is only 15 km from the western scenic area of Changbai Mountain.
 Trains: Trains to Baishan City are mostly from neighbouring cities and towns, such as Tonghua, Shenyang, Baihe, Ji’an, Dandong, Longjing, Dalian and Dunhua. Visitors can take a train to Tonghua, Shenyang or Dalian and then take a train to Baishan.
 Bus: Visitors can take long-distance buses from/to Jilin City, Tianjin, Yanji, Harbin, Shenyang, Dalian and Changchun to/from the Baishan Long-distance Bus Station. Buses to Tonghua (depart every half hour between 06:30 and 17:30) and Jiangyuan (depart every 5 minutes between 06:20 and 17:40) are available from the West Long-distance Bus Station.
 Intracity Bus: There are 23 bus routes in the city, among which buses No. 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, 18 and 19 pass the Baishan Railway Station, buses No. 3 and 16 pass the Baishan Long-distance Bus Station, and buses No. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 11, 15 and 16 pass the West Long-distance Bus Station,

 Weather: Baishan has a temperate continental monsoon climate with a short but rainy summer, a cool but sunny autumn, and a dry and cold winter. In spring, temperature changes a lot between day and night. The average annual temperature is 4.6°C (40.28°F), and the highest temperature in summer is 36.5°C (97.7°F) while the lowest temperature in winter may drop to -42.2°C (-43.96°F). The best time to visit Baishan City is between July and September.

 Dining and Shopping 
Since Baishai neighbors the North Korea, authentic North Korea food including kimchi, glutinous rice cake and cool noodles can be found in the city. Local people are fond of Jilin and Northeastern cuisines which are cooked through stewing, boiling and dressing with sauce. In the city, you can also have a taste of mountain delicacies such as ginseng and deer antlers.

Ginseng and mineral water are famous local products of Baishan. Other mountain delicacies and products include black fungus and wild lucid ganoderma, blueberry wind, rhodiola rosea wine, deer antler wine, black pottery wares, stone carvings and wood carvings.
