Jiefangbei (Liberation Stele)
Standing in the most prosperous downtown, Jiefangbei (people’s liberation monument), a 27.5-meter-high (90 feet) architecture, is one of the symbolic constructions in Chongqing City. It is both the symbol of Chongqing’s civilization and the evidence of the city’s history. It was originally a wooden architecture, called ‘Soul Castle’ and erected on March 12, 1940, the date commemorating the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. In 1945 after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, it was reconstructed and renamed ‘The War Victory Stele’ which was again changed into ‘Chongqing People's Liberation Stele’ by General Liu Bocheng in 1950.
Jiefangbei Pedestrian Commercial Street
In 1997, the Chongqing City Government built Jiefangbei Pedestrian Commercial Street, the first commercial pedestrian street in China, around the Jiefangbei Stele. It centers on Jiefangbei, covering Minzu Road, Minquan Road and Zourong Road.
This street is not a golden trade market in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, it also enjoy the fame as the ‘First Street in West China’. It is the center of the city marked as Chongqing's commercial heart since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The shopping square, completed at the end of 1997, is 400 meters (437 yards) from east to west, and 350 meters (383 yards) from north to south, covering an area of 22,400 square meters (6 acres). Around the square there are more than 3,000 stores and shops of various kinds, with two dozen large malls and shopping centers, a dozen star-grade hotels, and over 300 establishments and offices such as banks, stock markets, postal and telecommunication services and places for entertainment.
