Fuzhou, located in the southeastern coastal area of China, is blessed with a typical subtropical monsoon climate. It enjoys a moderate climate, with a mean annual temperature of 19.6 °C (67.3 °F). In the coldest month of January, the temperature averages around 10.5 °C (50.9 °F); while the highest temperature may occur in July or August when the average temperature reaches 28.6 °C (83.5 °F). It is quite humid, with the annual rainfall being 1,343 millimeters (52.9 inches). Typhoons are likely to hit the city in July, August and September, usually occurring twice a year.

During the lengthy spring, rainy days play a major role and account for over half a month. There is also considerable variation in the temperature. The temperature goes up from 12 °C (53.6 °F) to 25 °C (77 °F) throughout the transition of the season. In summer, it is generally sunny and hot. The maximum temperature goes beyond 37.4 °C (99.3 °F), and may exceed 40 °C (104 °F) in some areas. In recent years, as a result of the urban heat island effect, it is not rare that the temperature rises to 36 °C (96.8 °F) by noon. The autumn, with the average temperature of 16.7 - 18.3 °C (62.1 - 64.9 °F), is the most agreeable season and certainly the preferred time for sightseeing. When winter comes, it is quite dry and not very cold, as the average temperature varies between 9.7 - 11.0 °C (49.5 - 51.8 °F).
