Guniujiang Natural Reserve

Ask Question

Guniujiang Nature Reserve lies in the west of Huangshan Mountain, although it is not as upright as Huangshan Mountain, its vegetation is denser than Huangshan Mountain. Some pine trees here are majestic, and some graceful, however, the most attractive and impressive part in Guniujiang Nature Reserve is those odd roots. The life of the trees cannot compare with the stones, but the roots and the stones in Guniujiang Nature Reserve reveal a kind of magic. They are covered by lichen so tightly that we cannot distinguish which ones are older and even which ones are roots. Some roots are boorish and vigorous, which wrap the stone as if the mother embraces her child. They have the same color and luster, looking like both the tree and the stone, as if they are one integrated mass. Some are rooted from the gloomy swallet, twining along the cliff toward the upper place which is over 11 yards to get more sunshine and grow into a towering tree.

The water makes the virgin forest of Guniiujiang Nature Reserve more beautiful, vehement and multicolored. It has different statuses in different places, and every scene makes us feel reluctant to leave. In the shallow water, it is limpid, green and bright; we cannot help keeping our eyes on the water: the sunlight passes through leaves and falls on the ground; the figures on the ground cobbles can be seen clearly; the water waves are joggling, and one or two leaves are adrift on the water surface, all of which make a beautiful picture.

There are many deep and serene pools in Guniujiang Nature Reserve, such as Fairy Pool, Yellow Dragon Pool, Black Dragon Pool etc, and most of them have no names. The pools look like many dark green jades inlaying the thick forest and valleys. The water in the pool is so pure and quiet, which not only constitutes the tangible body of the nature, but also blesses the nature with the soul and force.

Although Guniujiang Nature Reserve is covered by thick virgin forest, most of areas cannot be reached. However, there is a peaceful and wild road that came into being three hundred years ago. It starts from Guanyin Temple, passing by Dayankeng, and extends to Dali Mountain, and then meanders to the outside world, which is about 31 miles long. There were ever mysterious, strenuous and rushed passers on this road, they were private salt dealers, who opened this road in order to dodge from the check of feudal officials, till now the site of post-houses in those years still exist. There is also a site of Buddha Hall named Shanqing on this old road, which was committed to the flames when the monks here were discovered to make false coins in the end of Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911).

Massy falling leaves overspread the old road, and one or tow big trees that have been pull up by the wind in the upper space and lie on the road can be seem from time to time.
