Dagu Glacier

Ask Question

Dagu Glacier lies near Sandagu Villge, in Heishui County, which is 280 kilometers (174 miles) from Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. The glacier was relatively unknown until Japanese scientists discovered it in 1992 by using satellite imagery. Geologically, it is low in altitude and is a relatively young formation. Some people consider it to be one of the prettiest glaciers in the world.

Dagu Glacier covers an area of over 200 square kilometers (49,421 acres), with an altitude of 3,000-5,000 meters (9,843 - 16,404 feet). The glaciers are shaped in various forms, such as 'U'-type valleys, glacier cirques, moraine lakes, glacier waterfalls and caves. In addition to the glacier sights, there are spectacular snow-covered mountains, rocky highlands, alpine lakes, primitive forests, and green grasslands. The area is also a virtual paradise of flora and fauna, including rare wild animals, such as golden monkeys, small pandas, mossbacks, argals and golden pheasants.

The area is also famous for its historical and cultural sights. During the Long March of CCP (1934 - 1936), the Red Army had crossed the Yakexia, Changde and Dagu snow mountains, and 'The Site of Luhua Meeting' are just witnesses to that great event. Within the area there are also three Dagu Tibetan villages that are worth seeing. They are the Shang, Zhong and Xia Dagu Villages. They represent primitive simplicity at its finest.
