Urumqi has a temperate continental climate with the mean annual temperature around 7o C (45o F). It is fairly dry, with an average annual precipitation of only 236 millimeters (9.3 inches).
Summer and winter are comparatively long, while autumn and spring are very short. In summer, it is hot, but not sultry at all, which makes the city an ideal summer resort. The temperature varies greatly in a day. Even in the hottest months, July and August, a spare sweater is necessary. In autumn, the daily temperature range becomes even wider. The winter lasts more than four months and is unbearably cold. The ideal time to travel in the city is from July to October.
