Chengshantou Hilltop

Ask Question

The Jiaodong Peninsula in China is just like a 'wedge' which has been hammered into the sea. The Chengshantou Hilltop is just located on the sharp edge of this 'wedge'. It is the battle area of the land against the ocean. The land puts its huge rock into the sea, while the sea ruthlessly revenges the land by beating the rock with its huge wave day after day.

The Chengshantou Hilltop lies in Rongcheng City (county level) of Shandong Province and it was also named 'End of the Sky'. It is the east end of the junction area of China's land and sea, of which the eastward is the vast ocean. Early from around the 200 BC, Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor unified the whole nation under a centralized power. After he founded the country, he used to come here to worship the mountain and ocean and search for the immortal medicine. His chancellor Li Si left the characters of 'End of the Sky, East Gate of Qin'. Chengshantou Hilltop is China's earliest place to watch the sunrise above the sea. In the ancient classics, it was considered as the abode of the 'God of Sun'. In the 94 BC, Liu Che, the emperor of the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) once worshiped the 'God of Sun', watched the sunrise and built a temple for the 'God of Sun'.

The Chengshentou Hilltop is surrounded by the sea on three sides. It is actually a narrow and huge rock standing in the sea, with his head high up. The huge rock is over a hundred meters above the sea level, like a huge ship about to depart, ready to challenge the strong wind and powerful sea. Standing on the front part of the huge rock, you can see the V-shaped stone island in the near sea. From the color and topography, we can know that the stone island and this huge rock belong to one. The V top of the stone island points directly to the front. They are the brave vanguard towards the sea.

The huge waves crazily beat the huge rock. The roaring waves drowned out all the other noises. The green waves run from the far to the near one after another. They dashed to the stone wall at the risk of sacrificing their life, and then turn into white foams. On the top of the huge rock there is always strong gale which screams as the battle cry for the war between the land and the sea. The salanganes with superb skill fly in the wind, showing their excellent aerial aerobatics. Sometimes they suddenly rush to the water surface; as they are about to touch the water they just lift up straightly; often, they fly in whirls, drawing rounds of arcs in the sky.

At the bottom of the rock, about several meters above the sea level, there is a warning board writing 'Off Please'. That is because the waves here are moody: most of the time the spray is only one or two meters high which is not enough to rush on to the rock. However, there is usually a big wave after several minutes. Being four to five meters high, they roar and reach on the shore. When the water retreats, it can whirl away anything within several meters of the shore.

The distant sea surface looks very peaceful. The sunlight penetrates the cloud aperture and cast tens of thousands of spun gold to the water surface. Looking back, the mountains in the far are silent, nurturing the colorful trees and flowers. These two powers both accumulates strength in silence and only at Chengshantou Hilltop, they reveal their true temperament and compete with each other incessantly.
