Taking up an area of 250,000 square meters (62 acres), Beijing Railway Station is located west of Jianguomen, inside of the 2nd Ring Road. It was the most important railway station in the city, with the largest scale and most advanced equipments before the establishment of the West Railway Station.

Famed as the greeting door of the city, Beijing Railway Station doesn't only operate domestic trains to most parts of China, such as Harbin, Shandong, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Chengde and Baotou lines, but it also operates international trains to Pyongyang of North Korea, Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia and Moscow of Russia. Meanwhile, it is also a transportation hub of Beijing. The main building of the station is built north to south, in front of which there is a large square of 40, 000 square meters (10 acres). Inside it are equipped with 6 VIP Rooms, 1 Waiting Room for the soft seat carriages, 4 common Waiting Rooms, 4 Waiting Rooms for Important Tourists, 1 Waiting Room for Ticket Checking and 8 platforms.

Since the year 1976, Beijing Railway Station has been modernized continuously, equipped with ticket printing system, television monitoring system, wireless communication, automatic train broadcasting, central air conditioning system, automatic fire alarm system and sprinkler system, automatic tickets machine, online service and enquiry hotlines. At the same time, the service functions has also been diversified, including, a hostel, a business center, a coffee bar, a tourism office, a bookstore, supermarkets, a business street, electronic luggage locker, Chinese restaurants and fast food restaurants.

Ticket Office
The ticket office in the west of the railway station has a total of 26 ticket windows, selling tickets to all parts of China within 10 days, and return tickets and tickets starting from other cities or places within 3-20 days. The Ticket Windows No. 25 and 26 are for ticket cancelling service (Tickets should be cancelled before the train starting.). Outside of the ticket office, there are also 10 ticket windows at the west side, offering ticket selling service as well.

In addition, there are 4 ticket windows set at the east side of the exit, marked with No. 82, 83, 84, 85, offering ticket selling and booking services. The other 8 ticket windows on the east side of the exit offer both ticket and the transfer formalities. For the convenient of the short journey travelers, a green ticket window is set in the ticket checking hall on the second floor if the railway station.
